ADHD Treatment for Adults in West Ashley, Charleston
Comprehensive evaluation and medication management for adult ADHD — stimulant and non-stimulant options tailored to your life.
Adult ADHD Is Underdiagnosed
Most adults with ADHD were never diagnosed as children. They developed compensatory strategies — working harder, staying up later, relying on adrenaline and deadlines — that masked the underlying condition through school and early career. But as responsibilities grow — demanding jobs, families, finances — those strategies stop working. The result is chronic disorganization, missed deadlines, difficulty sustaining focus in meetings, impulsive decisions, and a persistent feeling that you are not performing to your potential.
At Hope Behavioral Medicine in West Ashley, our board-certified psychiatric providers specialize in evaluating and treating ADHD in adults. We understand that adult ADHD presents differently than the hyperactive child most people picture — and we have the diagnostic expertise to distinguish ADHD from anxiety, depression, and other conditions that can mimic its symptoms.
Symptoms in Adults
Adult ADHD symptoms include difficulty sustaining attention on tasks (especially tedious or repetitive ones), chronic disorganization and clutter, poor time management and frequently running late, trouble completing projects, impulsive spending or decision-making, restlessness or feeling internally driven, difficulty following through on commitments, and problems maintaining focus during conversations or meetings. Hyperactivity in adults often manifests as restlessness rather than the physical overactivity seen in children.
Our Evaluation Process
Your first visit is a comprehensive 45 to 60 minute psychiatric evaluation. We review your symptom history (including childhood patterns), use validated screening tools, assess for co-occurring conditions (anxiety and depression frequently accompany ADHD), and rule out other explanations for your symptoms. A thorough evaluation is essential — starting medication without proper diagnosis leads to poor outcomes.
Medication Options
Stimulant medications (methylphenidate and amphetamine classes) remain the most effective treatment for ADHD and are first-line for most patients. Non-stimulant options (atomoxetine, bupropion, guanfacine) are available for patients who prefer them or who have contraindications to stimulants. We start at the lowest effective dose, titrate carefully over several weeks, and monitor monthly during the optimization phase. Once stable, follow-up visits occur every two to three months. For patients receiving stimulant prescriptions via telehealth, periodic in-person visits may be required per South Carolina prescribing regulations.
