Depression Treatment in West Ashley, Charleston

Evidence-based medication management and counseling for depression — because you deserve more than a 10-minute medication check.

Understanding Depression

Depression is not just feeling sad. It is a persistent medical condition that affects how you think, feel, and function in daily life. Major depressive disorder involves prolonged periods of low mood, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm. Depression affects approximately 21 million adults in the United States each year, making it one of the most common mental health conditions — and one of the most treatable.

At Hope Behavioral Medicine in West Ashley, our board-certified psychiatric providers deliver comprehensive depression treatment that goes beyond a quick prescription. We take the time to understand your symptoms, your history, and what has or has not worked in the past — then build a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.

Types of Depression We Treat

Major Depressive Disorder is the most common form, characterized by depressive episodes lasting at least two weeks with symptoms that significantly impair daily functioning. Episodes may be single or recurrent.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) involves a chronically depressed mood lasting two years or longer. Symptoms may be less severe than major depression but are persistent and can erode quality of life over time.

Treatment-Resistant Depression is diagnosed when a patient has not responded adequately to two or more antidepressant trials at appropriate doses and durations. Our providers have particular expertise in these cases, bringing a fresh diagnostic perspective and considering augmentation strategies, medication switches, and combination approaches.

Our Treatment Approach

Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation — 45 to 60 minutes. We assess the severity and duration of your symptoms, screen for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety and insomnia, review your medication history, and discuss your goals for treatment. Medication options include SSRIs (sertraline, escitalopram, fluoxetine), SNRIs (venlafaxine, duloxetine), bupropion, mirtazapine, and other agents selected based on your symptom profile and tolerability.

Our licensed counselors also provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and behavioral activation — evidence-based therapies that help patients identify and change the thought patterns and behaviors that perpetuate depression. Many patients benefit from combining medication with therapy, and our team coordinates both services within the practice.

When to Seek Help

If you have been experiencing persistent low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, or difficulty functioning for more than two weeks, it is time to seek professional help. Depression does not resolve on its own through willpower — it is a medical condition that responds to treatment. Patients from across the greater Charleston area, including James Island, Johns Island, downtown Charleston, and North Charleston, trust our West Ashley team for expert, compassionate depression care. We also see patients statewide via telehealth.
