Anxiety Treatment in West Ashley, Charleston
Medication management and counseling for anxiety disorders — from board-certified providers who take the time to understand your experience.
Understanding Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is more than ordinary worry. When anxiety becomes persistent, disproportionate to the situation, and starts interfering with your ability to work, sleep, or maintain relationships, it may be an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the most common category of mental health conditions in the United States, affecting approximately 40 million adults — yet fewer than half of those affected receive treatment.
At Hope Behavioral Medicine in West Ashley, our board-certified psychiatric providers specialize in evaluating and treating anxiety disorders across the spectrum — from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and health anxiety. We provide both medication management and counseling, and we coordinate these services within our practice so your treatment plan is cohesive.
Types of Anxiety We Treat
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves persistent, excessive worry about a range of topics — work, health, finances, family — that is difficult to control and occurs more days than not. Physical symptoms often include muscle tension, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbance.
Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks — sudden episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart pounding, shortness of breath, chest tightness, dizziness, and a sense of impending doom. Many patients first present to emergency rooms convinced they are having a heart attack.
Social Anxiety Disorder involves intense fear of social situations where you might be scrutinized, judged, or embarrassed. This goes beyond shyness — it can prevent people from attending meetings, speaking up at work, or maintaining friendships.
Our Treatment Approach
Treatment begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation — typically 45 to 60 minutes. Your provider will assess the type and severity of your anxiety, screen for co-occurring conditions (depression and insomnia frequently accompany anxiety), review your medical history and current medications, and discuss your treatment preferences.
Medication options include SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), buspirone, and in some cases short-term use of benzodiazepines for acute symptom management. We start at low doses, titrate carefully, and monitor for both efficacy and side effects at regular follow-up visits.
For patients who prefer a non-medication approach or want to complement their medication with therapy, our licensed counselors provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — the most evidence-based psychotherapy for anxiety disorders. Many patients benefit from both medication and therapy together, and our team coordinates these services so your providers are always aligned.
When to Seek Treatment
Consider scheduling an evaluation if anxiety is interfering with your work performance or daily responsibilities, you are avoiding situations due to anxiety, you are experiencing physical symptoms like chronic muscle tension or insomnia, you have had one or more panic attacks, or you have tried to manage anxiety on your own but symptoms persist. Patients across the greater Charleston area — including James Island, Johns Island, North Charleston, and downtown — choose our West Ashley office for the specialized expertise and personal attention that effective anxiety treatment requires.
