Your First Visit

In person in West Ashley or by telehealth anywhere in South Carolina.

Taking the First Step

Reaching out about anxiety, low mood, focus, sleep or something you cannot quite name takes courage. Here is what happens next, so you know what to expect before your first visit with Hope Behavioral Medicine.

Scheduling

We see adults 18 and older. Request an appointment or call (843) 737-0312. New patients are often able to be scheduled within a week of requesting an appointment. No referral is needed for most insurance plans; some HMO plans may require one, and we verify before scheduling. We accept Medicare, most major commercial plans, and all South Carolina Medicaid managed care plans except Select Health (First Choice).

In Person or by Telehealth

You can be seen at our West Ashley office in Charleston or by telehealth from anywhere in South Carolina. Telehealth visits use secure, HIPAA-compliant video. All you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and a private space.

What to Bring

  • A photo ID and your insurance card
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with doses
  • Any previous psychiatric evaluation records, if you have them
  • A few notes on what you want help with and how long it has been going on

What Happens at the Visit

Your first visit is an evaluation. Your provider asks about what brought you in, your history, your health and your goals, and there are no wrong answers. Together you talk through what may be going on and the options that fit you. Depending on your needs, your plan may include medication when clinically appropriate, counseling with one of our licensed therapists, or both, and we coordinate them within our practice.

If you are looking for help with ADHD and have not had a formal evaluation or testing before, objective ADHD testing is required before ADHD treatment begins. The testing is self-pay and not covered by insurance; your visits with your provider may be billed to insurance.

After the First Visit

Follow-up visits check how you are doing and adjust the plan with you, in person or by telehealth. Read about medication management and counseling, or meet our providers.

If You Need Help Now

Hope Behavioral Medicine is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911.
