Mental Health Care by Video Anywhere in South Carolina: How It Works

How virtual mental health care works for adults across South Carolina: what can be done by video, who it suits, how a first visit is set up and when to come in person.

South Carolina is a long state to cross. From the Upstate or the Pee Dee, an office in West Ashley can be hours away, and a weekday appointment can cost a morning of driving on top of the visit itself. Video care lets you skip that drive and meet with a mental health provider from home, from a parked car or from a quiet room at work.

What virtual mental health care is

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) describes virtual care as patients and providers connecting by video, phone, text or email, and notes it is often called telehealth or telemedicine. Assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, therapy and regular check-ins are among the services NIMH says may be offered this way. NIMH adds that virtual care can be effective for anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression and PTSD.

Who it tends to suit

NIMH points to four benefits. No travel means visits fit more easily into a busy week. Appointments may need less notice and come with more flexible hours. People who cannot drive, or who live in remote areas, can reach care they might otherwise go without. And some people find talking from their own space less intimidating than a waiting room.

How it works with us, step by step

  1. Reach out. Call the office or send a request online, and tell us what is going on.
  2. Coverage check. Before your first visit, our front desk verifies your benefits and sends intake forms.
  3. Your link. You receive a secure video link. There is nothing to download.
  4. The evaluation. Your first visit is a full evaluation with a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, not a quick check-in.
  5. Your plan. Together you decide on next steps, which may include counseling, follow-up visits and medication when indicated, chosen with you rather than for you.

If lab work is part of your care, your provider can send the order to a lab of your choice close to where you live. Your follow-up visits stay with the same provider whether you log on from Rock Hill or come to our office.

What we see adults for by video

Adults 18 and older anywhere in the state can be seen for anxiety, depression, ADHD, insomnia, medication management and individual counseling. Our South Carolina city pages describe care for your part of the state.

Insurance

NIMH recommends confirming with your insurer or your provider's billing office that telehealth visits are covered, because policies vary from state to state. We check that for you before the first appointment, and your costs depend on your plan.

In person when you want it

Some people like to meet their provider face to face at least once. You can book any visit at our West Ashley office, switch back to video later, and keep the same provider either way.

This article is general information, not medical advice, and does not create a patient–provider relationship. Every situation is different, so see a provider who can evaluate yours and develop a plan of care. Any medication discussed here may not be right for you: the right choice depends on your diagnoses, other health conditions and current medicines, so take medication only as directed by the provider managing your care. If you are ever in doubt about an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
