ADHD does not end at graduation. Many adults in the Charleston area reach their thirties or forties before anyone connects the missed deadlines, the unfinished projects and the constant mental noise to a condition that can be treated. If that sounds familiar, here is how adult ADHD shows up, how it is evaluated, and what treatment looks like.
How ADHD looks in adults
Hyperactivity usually fades with age; what remains is harder to see from the outside. Common signs in adults include trouble starting and finishing tasks, losing track of time, forgetting appointments and bills, restlessness, difficulty following long conversations, and a pattern of underperforming at work despite real ability. Many adults have also spent years being told they are lazy or careless, which takes its own toll on confidence.
How we evaluate it
There is no single test. A thorough evaluation at Hope Behavioral Medicine takes 45 to 60 minutes and includes a detailed history going back to childhood, standardized rating scales, a review of your sleep, mood and medical history, and a look at other conditions that can mimic or accompany ADHD, such as anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. Old report cards or input from a parent or partner can be helpful if you have them.
Treatment options
- Stimulant medications are the most studied and most effective option for most adults. They are controlled medications, so South Carolina and federal rules may require periodic in-person visits and limit how prescriptions are written.
- Non-stimulant medications are a good fit for adults who cannot take stimulants, have side effects, or prefer a once-daily option without controlled-substance requirements.
- Skills and structure matter as much as medication: external reminders, breaking work into short blocks, and a consistent sleep schedule. Our licensed therapists provide counseling focused on these practical strategies.
What to expect after you start
Medication is started at a low dose and adjusted at follow-up visits two to four weeks apart until the benefit is clear and side effects are acceptable. Blood pressure and heart rate are checked along the way. Most adults know within a few weeks whether a medication is working for them.
In person or by telehealth
Evaluations and follow-ups are available at our West Ashley office in Charleston and by secure video for adults anywhere in South Carolina. Call to schedule; new patients are often able to be scheduled within a week of requesting an appointment.
